SRSD Writing Strategies

Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD)

Self-regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), in particular the pedagogy developed by Leslie Laud and Pooja Patel, offers learning specialists a way to teach an effective, research-backed writing curriculum to students of all ages. Fox & Hedgehog tutors are trained in SRSD.

SRSD is built on the teaching of 8 core routines, which the developers stress are flexible and iterative in nature. These routines include, among others, providing exemplars or mentor texts, helping students learn to plan and organize, teaching them how to revise and edit, and allowing them to practice self-regulation through self-talk and goal-setting.

The authors stress that these routines are flexible and can be adapted to each learner. This is not a rigid, cookie-cutter way to teach writing. It instead allows repeated, collaborative practice with other students and adults, and it builds in elements of self-regulation so that students can monitor themselves and their motivation and attention as they work. The routines allow students to use and build on their social and emotional learning so that they not only become better writers but also better at understanding their own strategies and goals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and learning specialists can still learn and practice SRSD by going to www.thinksrsd.com. There, you will find online learning resources and a link to sign up for e-learning.
